At the ungodly hour of 3am Pacific Time, the Red Sox kicked off the 2008 Major League Baseball Season in Tokyo, Japan against the Oakland A’s. And what an opening game it was, going to 10 innings to be won by Manny on a double, which he seemed to think was going to leave the park.
I like that MLB had the Sox open the season in Japan, I like that they’re trying to do more to play to the world wide appeal of baseball. Secretly, I hope that one day my kids or grandkids will talk about major league teams from all over the world, about having the Sox travel to Japan or Mexico to play professional teams in those areas.
I’m not going to stay up until 3am to watch the Sox, so I’ll have to catch highlights on SportsCenter again like I did for this game, but congrats on the win guys. Keep it up.

“Red Sox Nation? What a bunch of (nonsense) that is,” Steinbrenner said in the magazine interview. “That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”
By now, if you’re a Red Sox fan, or even just a baseball in general, you’ve probably heard about Hank Steinbrenner’s statements about “Red Sox nation”, and how the Yankees are the number one team in the Solar System, etc.
I will confess, it did sort of rattle my cage a little bit, and I had a very fiery post all set up and ready to go in response, until I realized that Hank was just helping my cause. Statements like that are why everyone HATES the Yankees, because they’ve been running around for umpteen years acting like their shit don’t stink. If you ask anyone who follows baseball and isn’t a Yankees fan how they feel about the team from New York that isn’t the Mets, I would be willing to bet that the vast majority would say “screw the Yankees”.
So, thank you, Hank Steinbrenner, for helping me make my case as to why we should all hate the Yankees.

Despite how overused this song has become for these moments, I’ll let Freddie Mercury do the talking for me.
On some more Sox related commentary, there really wasn’t a better way for to the series to end than with Pap striking out the last hitter he faced. Mike Lowell is a perfect choice for series MVP; especially with his performance in Game 4.
Unrelated Sox commentary - I swear to Buddha that if the Sox sign A-Rod, I will burn my favorite hat.

9-1 baby, on top of a gem by Shilling. I love it. I eagerly await the Yankees’ collapse, so that we can beat Cleveland like a drum.

The Word of the Now for today is “gem”.
To find a definition of gem, you need look no further than Josh Beckett’s performance last night against the Angels. Complete game, four hit shutout. At one point I believe he retired 18 (or 19) consecutive hitters - absolutely amazing pitching.
The offense showed up as well; not with a huge explosion but enough “oomph” to get one win in the bag. A shot from Big Papi, and good hitting from the most underrated hitter in baseball (Kevin Youkilis) got the job done on offense.
Game 2 is tomorrow at 8:30, which will be a special treat for me as my wife’s best friend (who is also a Yankees fan) from college is coming into town to visit. GO SOX

Here we go - as much as I like football, this is what October is all about. Baseball playoff time, and this matchup should be a pretty good one. We’ve got the Angels, out of my old home state of California against my beloved Red Sox.
Beckett vs. Lackey, Big Papi and Vlad…I am looking forward to this series.
So, here are my playoff predictions. Sox take the Angels in 4 games, advancing to the ALCS where they meet the Indians, who are coming off a 3 three game sweep of the (spit) Yankees.
Over in the NL, the NLCS will be Phillies vs. Cubs. As much as I’d like to see a D’Backs vs. Rockies NLCS, I don’t think it’s going to happen.
The World Series will be the Red Sox vs. the Phillies, because the Cubbies will collapse in the NLCS.
My goals for the playoffs go as follows.
1. Red Sox win it all
2. Barring that, the Yankees do not win.
3. If the Sox can’t win, I’d like to see either the Angels or the Rockies win it.

Exactly how I feel about the Red Sox performance in the first two games of the series against the damn Yankees?
This article is a perfect, beautiful, summary of my feelings.

Sox-Yankees: Tonight at 7:05 EDT.
Dice-K is on the hill against Andy Pettitte, the (spit) Yankees are coming off being absolutely mauled by the Tigers last night. Detroit pounded the (spit) Yankees with a 16-0 shutout last night, and I must say that watching Mike Mussina get thrashed around was truly a joyous wonder.
The Sox had yesterday off, coming off a weekend spent beating the tar out of the other, lesser team that has Sox in their name. All this adds up to mean that the Red Sox have an 8 game lead over the damn Yankees in the AL East, and the (spit) Yankees are three games back from the Wild Card as well.
There are 31 games left for the Red Sox this season, and there is one more series against the Yankees in September.
A sweep would be great. Fetch the brooms! GO SOX!
